Nelson's appearance on the festival is part of an ongoing exchange between composers associated with the Theremin Electroacoustic Studio of the Moscow Conservatory and a group of American composers organized by Jon Appleton of Dartmouth College. The group that went to Moscow in May 1995 included ten Americans from around the country who had hosted Russian composers in October of 1994.
